Application Roll
Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008I use quite a few applications on a daily basis, thought I’d put them out there and see what else is out there. I didn’t include all of the standard apps such as creative suite or gmail.
Windows
- Digsby (chat client w/ social and email integration)
- Aptana (IDE built on Eclipse w/ integrated FTP, plugins for Rails & PHP)
- WinSCP (Standard FTP with ability to open up terminal over sftp)
- Launchy (quickly launch applications, similar to Launchbar or Quicksilver)
- FoxIt Reader (Extremely fast PDF opener, no reason to use Adobe Reader)
- 7-zip (Help windows open archives besides .zip)
- uTorrent (Very light torrent client)
- Dropbox (Sync files over the web w/ client apps for win/mac/linux)
- fabForce DBDesigner 4 (Relational DB modeling tool)
- Notepad++ (Basic text edtior with built in FTP)
- Picasa (Photo viewer from google well google bought them)
- TightVNC (very lightweight VNC client/server)
Web Based
- Tada List (Very Basic Todo List)
- Writeboard (Web-based text documents with collaboration integration)
- HiTask (Another todo list application, more features such as calendar and export functionality)
- 280 slides (Make presentations online and share with anyone, very keynote like)
- Remember the Milk (Another todo list application but with twitter integration)
Firefox Plugins
- Chatzilla (IRC chat client)
- CSSViewer (Shows CSS styles on hover)
- Delicious (a necessity, active search rocks)
- Download Statusbar (similar to Chrome’s download bar)
- JSView (Quick link to view javascript for site)
- Firebug (A must for developers)
- LinkChecker (Checks all of the links on the current page, color codes them based on response code. finds broken links easier)
- Locationbar (greys out everything in the location bar except for the domain)
- MeasureIt (measure anything in the browser)
- Password Exporter (Very useful if transferring passwords or you need to wipe your firefox profile)
- Quick Restart (Restarts firefox with ctrl+alt+r)
- Remember The Milk for Gmail (adds Remember the Milk functionality into gmail)
- ScribeFire (amazing blog editor within firefox, opens as a panel in the bottom of the window)
- Secure Login (automates logins with key presses, similar to Opera’s wand)
- Speed Dial (Direct access to your most visited sites)
- Tab Catalog (Catalog view of open tabs)
- Table2Clipboard (easily copy tabular data from sites into excel)
- Ubiquity (Your Command line to the internet)
- Web Developer (web developer toolbar, very useful tools)
- Twitterfox (update and display your twitter from firefox)
OS X
- Textmate (A trusty text editor)
- Adium (multi network chat client)
- CSSEdit (very slick CSS coding, shows you live preview while modifying css)
- Keep an eye out for espresso (Mac Web Development) from the same guys that make CSSEdit
- Dropbox (Sync files between mac/pc/linux/internet)
- YummyFTP (Reliable FTP client)
I know I’m missing quite a few OS X apps, didn’t have my macbook in front of me at the moment.
